What Is Decaf Coffee?

Decaf coffee is made from coffee beans whose caffeine has mostly been removed before roasting. It is still coffee, and it still contains some caffeine. Water-based, solvent-based and carbon-dioxide processes describe how the beans were decaffeinated; they do not prescribe a roast level, flavor or brewing method.

Decaf can taste chocolatey, nutty, fruity or roasty, depending on the original coffee, processing, roast and freshness. It is not inherently low-acid, dark-roasted or weak. Judge the bag's tasting description as a guide to that coffee, rather than assuming all decaf shares one profile.

How Much Caffeine Is in Decaf?

That is more informative than calling coffee “chemical-free”: water, caffeine and coffee flavor compounds are all chemicals. The practical buying questions are which process was used, what coffee went into it and how it was roasted.

Preparation and Recipe

A Decaf Pour-Over Starting Point

Use 18 g decaf beans and 300 g water, a paper-filter dripper, grinder, kettle and scale. Allow about five minutes. This is an adjustable home method, not a tested claim that decaf needs a special ratio.

  1. Prepare the brewer. Rinse a paper filter in a pour-over dripper, discard the rinse water and place the dripper over a heatproof server.
  2. Measure and grind. Use 18 g decaf coffee at a medium grind and heat 300 g water to about 94 °C. These are starting settings, not requirements of decaffeination.
  3. Brew. Add the grounds, pour about 50 g water to wet them and wait 30 seconds. Pour the remaining 250 g steadily in two or three additions, keeping the water inside the filter.
  4. Let it drain. Allow the water to pass through, remove the dripper and swirl the server. Expect less than 300 ml of brewed coffee because the grounds retain water. Taste before adjusting the next brew.

The input ratio is 1:16.7, calculated as 300 ÷ 18. Doubling both inputs to 36 g and 600 g preserves that ratio but requires a suitable brewer and another grind check. It does not imply double the finished volume or a known caffeine total.
