HARIO Switch vs. Clever Dripper: Workflow, Filters and Fit
Compare HARIO Switch and Clever Dripper by release controls, filters, model capacity and cup fit. Choose the brewer that suits your daily routine.
Quick Answer
Choose the HARIO Switch if you want to leave the brewer over its server and control steeping and drainage with a lever. Choose the Clever if steeping off the cup, then placing it on the cup to drain, fits your routine. Both use paper filtration. Match the exact model to its filters, serving recipe and receiving vessel before buying.

Choose the Release Action You Want to Use
The main difference is the movement you repeat:
- Switch: close the outlet for steeping, then operate the control to release coffee while the brewer remains over its receiver.
- Clever: steep on its stand or coaster, then place it on a suitable cup or server to open the outlet. Lifting it closes the outlet again.
The Switch's lever makes alternating closed and open phases convenient. The Clever's placement-operated valve suits a simple steep-and-release sequence. Both belong to the paper-filtered immersion family, with complete recipes on their method pages.
Match the Model to the Filter and Batch
This comparison uses the standard glass Switch 02/03 models and the reviewed large Clever:

| Feature | HARIO Switch | Large Clever |
|---|---|---|
| Release | Manual control, with the brewer over its receiver. | Placement on a suitable receiver opens the valve; lifting closes it. |
| Paper | Size-matched V60 papers: 02 for SSD-200-B, 03 for SSD-360-B. | Standard #4 papers for the reviewed large model. |
| Manufacturer size references | 200 ml (6.8 US fl oz) for SSD-200-B; 360 ml (12.2 US fl oz) for SSD-360-B. | 500 ml (16.9 US fl oz) practical capacity. |
| Body and parts | Glass cone with silicone, resin and steel parts. | Tritan plastic body in the reviewed model. |
| Useful routine | Change between steeping and open drainage without moving the brewer. | Steep separately, then place on the cup to drain. |
Capacity labels are not instructions to fill the bowl to that volume with water plus grounds, or promises of collected beverage yield. Choose a complete recipe for your desired serving, with the required headroom and a receiver large enough for its output.
Keep the correct paper size and shape with the brewer. V60 cone paper and #4 wedge paper are different. For another Clever size or market variant, check its own specified paper rather than extending the large model's #4 recommendation.
Check the Receiving Vessel Before Buying
Use the manufacturer's vessel requirements and a cool, empty setup for the initial fit check:
- Set the brewer and receiver level on a stable surface. Check rim and handle clearance.
- For Switch, confirm you can reach the control. For Clever, confirm the receiver supports the base and operates the release as intended.
- Rehearse placing and removing the brewer, with space to set down the wet brewer and used filter afterward.
Do not force a poor fit with an improvised spacer. If the vessel arrangement is uncertain, use a specified receiver or ask the seller about that exact combination before adding hot water.

Decide Whether You Will Actually Use Different Modes
The Switch's documented pour-over option is useful if you want to alternate open drainage and steeping in place. Choose a complete recipe for the mode you intend to use.
The Clever's ordinary steep-and-release routine is enough if that is your goal. Its outlet is open while it sits on the receiver, so the mechanism itself does not make drainage during pouring impossible. The practical distinction is how you open and close it.
Use the Switch method page or Clever method page for the full recipe. Moving only a steep time between them leaves out dose, paper, grind and the release stage.
Use a Short Ownership Checklist
Before choosing, settle three things:
- Your usual serving: a supported recipe and suitable receiver, rather than capacity alone.
- Your daily routine: the release movement you prefer and paper you can obtain easily.
- Care and parts: the selected model's cleaning instructions and access to replacement components.
A personal note: I also want to picture the movement I will repeat: where it stands, how I release the coffee and where it goes after draining. Extra flexibility is appealing when I have a use for it. Otherwise, I give more weight to a straightforward routine that fits the counter and the cups already in it.

HARIO's global SSD-360-B page calls 360 ml its “finished capacity”; the USA table calls it “dripper capacity.” The comparison uses it as the manufacturer's model-size reference, with the actual serving determined by the complete recipe.
