Nespresso Original: Pods, Cup Sizes and How to Brew
Nespresso Original makes short, concentrated coffees from small capsules. Start with the capsule's recommended size, then add milk or water to build the drink you want.

Key Takeaways
- 1Original capsules and Vertuo capsules are different formats: check the system name before buying.
- 2The familiar sizes are 25 ml ristretto, 40 ml espresso and 110 ml lungo; not every machine has three separate buttons.
- 3For a larger black coffee, add hot water to an espresso. For a stronger milk drink, consider a second fresh capsule instead of a longer extraction.

Pods and Cup Sizes
Nespresso Original, also called OriginalLine, is the espresso-focused Nespresso capsule system. It uses pressure extraction; Vertuo uses a different capsule shape and brewing system. The word “Nespresso” on its own is not enough to establish compatibility. Nespresso's system comparison explains the distinction.
For a Nespresso Original machine, buy a capsule explicitly labeled for the Original system. Compatible branded alternatives exist: for example, Starbucks' Canadian Original range is developed for that system. Check the exact package rather than assuming every capsule from that brand fits. Vertuo capsules and K-Cup pods do not fit an Original machine.

| Coffee setting | Nominal coffee output | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ristretto | 25 ml | Choose a capsule recommended for a short serving; a dedicated button is model dependent. |
| Espresso | 40 ml | A useful starting point for a short black coffee or a milk drink base. |
| Lungo | 110 ml | Use the capsule's lungo recommendation; this is a longer extraction through the coffee. |
These are Nespresso's published serving sizes, not the capacity of the empty cup or the amount of water to put in the tank. Leave room for crema, milk or added water.
Why a Three-Size System Can Have Two Buttons
The Original range includes different machines. The Essenza Mini instructions, for example, specify a 40 ml espresso button and a 110 ml lungo button. Their volumes can be reprogrammed. A capsule being suitable for 25 ml therefore does not mean every Original machine has a third, dedicated ristretto button.
If a familiar capsule suddenly fills a different amount, check saved volume settings before blaming the coffee. Use the reset or programming instructions for your exact model.

How to Brew with an Original Machine
You need: the machine, one compatible capsule, fresh drinking water and a cup larger than the intended serving. You do not need a grinder, a tamper or a separate paper filter. Complete the manufacturer's first-use rinse before making the first coffee.
- Fill and seat the water tank. Use drinking water; put milk in a separate milk system or frother, never in the water tank.
- Let the machine become ready. The indicator and warm-up behavior depend on the model.
- Insert one capsule and close the mechanism. Place your cup under the outlet. Do not force a damaged capsule or an incompatible shape into the machine.
- Select the capsule's recommended size. An espresso capsule at about 40 ml is a straightforward first reference. Let the programmed serving finish.
- Eject the used capsule after brewing. Then add milk or water if making a longer drink; empty the used-capsule container and drip tray regularly.
The Essenza Mini manual supports this basic workflow, but button combinations for rinsing, programming and descaling are machine specific. An integrated milk machine also has a separate cleaning routine for its milk parts.
Lungo, Americano or a Second Capsule?
These choices solve different problems:
- Want the capsule's longer extraction? Use an appropriate lungo capsule at its recommended volume. See what makes a lungo different.
- Want a bigger, less concentrated black coffee? Brew an espresso and add fresh hot water. For example, 40 ml espresso plus 120 ml water gives about 160 ml before allowing for crema and measurement variation. Our Americano guide explains how to adjust the dilution.
- Want more coffee presence in milk? A second fresh capsule adds another coffee dose. Pulling more water through the first used capsule does not add fresh grounds.
The practical distinction is control: separate water lets you change drink volume after extraction. Using two fresh capsules changes the amount of coffee as well as cost and caffeine. Two nominal 40 ml servings total about 80 ml, but that volume alone does not make them equivalent to a café double espresso's dose or strength.
Caffeine, Calories and Flavored Capsules
A 40 ml Original espresso is roughly a 1-calorie drink when served black. Its caffeine can vary substantially by capsule. Nespresso Hong Kong's size-specific FAQ lists 50–130 mg per 40 ml espresso and 2–4 mg for Original decaffeinated coffee. These are manufacturer reference ranges, not measurements of the capsule in your kitchen. Nespresso caffeine and energy references.
Serving, calories and source notes
“Roughly 1 calorie” rounds Nespresso's estimate of about 0.6 kcal for a plain 40 ml espresso. Its 110 ml lungo estimate is about 1 kcal. The Swiss FAQ lists around 1.5 kcal for an Original flavored cup; these small estimates exclude milk, cream, sugar and syrup. Caffeine varies by blend, capsule dose and extraction, and regional FAQs do not all publish the same range. Use a named product's current information when a specific amount matters.
An intensity number describes the coffee's sensory profile; it is not a caffeine score. Adding water dilutes an already brewed espresso without removing its caffeine. Two fresh capsules contribute the caffeine of both servings.
Flavor names also need reading carefully. Nespresso Canada's Caramello listing identifies a flavored roast-and-ground coffee with no added sugar. That does not turn every caramel-flavored capsule from every manufacturer into a sugar-free product. Check its ingredient list, especially for products that include milk powder or sweetener.
Original vs. Vertuo: Choose by the Drink You Make
Original is a sensible fit for espresso-sized coffees and milk drinks built from them. Its capsule choices and short servings are the main reasons to consider it. Choose the machine's milk arrangement separately: a basic machine may need a standalone frother; some models integrate milk preparation.
Vertuo is worth comparing when you also want larger black coffees from dedicated larger-format capsules. It makes small servings too, but its capsules do not interchange with Original. See the Vertuo sizes and compatibility guide before choosing a system.
For café-style control over dose, grind and extraction, compare a conventional espresso setup. A capsule machine trades those adjustments for simpler preparation. The presence of crema or a pressure number alone does not establish that two cups will have the same concentration or flavor.
For a milk drink, start with the coffee serving your latte or cappuccino needs, then add milk deliberately. Filling a large mug with milk around one small capsule can hide the coffee; reducing the milk is the simplest adjustment before adding another capsule.
Weak Coffee, Small Pours and Cleaning
| What you notice | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| Coffee tastes thin after changing settings | Compare the actual serving with the capsule's recommendation. Restore the intended volume before changing blends. |
| Milk overwhelms the coffee | Reduce the milk or use another fresh capsule. Do not equate a lungo button with a stronger dose. |
| Flow is unusually slow or irregular | Check water supply and the model's cleaning/descaling guidance. A different capsule can help separate capsule damage from a machine problem. |
| A familiar button gives too much or too little | Check programmed volume. Find the exact model's reset instructions rather than guessing a button sequence. |
| The drink is cooler than you want | Warm the cup with hot water, then empty it. If performance has changed, check maintenance instructions. |
Cleaning coffee residue and removing mineral scale are different jobs. Rinse removable parts as directed, wipe the exterior and keep the drip tray and capsule bin clean. Descale with the recommended product and complete the instructed rinsing stage; frequency depends on the machine's guidance, use and water. Consult Nespresso's machine assistance for your model rather than applying a universal routine to the entire Original range.
Use your local capsule collection or recycling service where available. Being aluminum does not by itself mean a used capsule belongs in the household recycling bin; collection rules vary by place and capsule material.
