Nespresso Vertuo: Pod Sizes, Compatibility and Brewing
Vertuo reads a capsule's barcode to brew espresso-sized coffees or larger cups. The capsule chooses the default serving, but the machine model determines which formats you can use.

Which Vertuo Pods Fit My Machine?
Use Vertuo-format capsules that explicitly support your model. Original capsules do not fit Vertuo, and Vertuo capsules do not fit Original. Nespresso's system guide describes the different technologies: Original uses pressure extraction; Vertuo spins its capsule and uses a barcode to set brewing parameters.
The name “Vertuo” covers several machines. It is also the name of an earlier model, so “original Vertuo machine” does not mean a machine from the separate OriginalLine system.

Why the exact capsule matters: the older Alto was a 414 ml serving; the current Alto Onice is 355 ml and uses a different compatibility list. “My machine makes Alto” is therefore not a sufficient check for a replacement sleeve. This comparison of the manufacturer's records is more useful than a single yes/no claim about all large Vertuo coffees.
Vertuo Cup Sizes Explained
The following are widely used serving names. The number is the capsule's nominal coffee output, not the cup's capacity or an amount of water you measure into the tank.

Nespresso's capsule FAQs also list 355 ml XL and 535 ml Carafe formats. Some models and capsule ranges support 25 ml ristretto. These additions need the compatibility check above; they are not extra buttons that make every capsule interchangeable.
Does Vertuo Make Espresso or Regular Coffee?
It offers both espresso-sized and larger coffee servings, using the Vertuo brewing process. A Mug capsule produces a longer black coffee, but it is not paper-filtered drip coffee. An espresso capsule gives a small concentrated serving, but the machine does not use the same extraction mechanism as a portafilter espresso machine.
That distinction matters when following recipes. An 80 ml double espresso capsule can be a convenient milk-drink base, but “80 ml” does not tell you the same dose or concentration as a café's double shot. Taste the coffee-to-milk balance and adjust milk accordingly. Foam volume is also not a measurement of coffee strength.
How to Brew a Vertuo Capsule
You need: a Vertuo machine, a compatible capsule, fresh drinking water and a cup or carafe with room above the capsule's stated serving. Complete the model's first-use rinse before making coffee. Milk preparation requires a separate frother or the machine's dedicated milk system.
- Fill and seat the tank. Use drinking water, not milk. Check that the used-capsule bin and drip tray are not full.
- Check the capsule and vessel. Match the capsule to your model and leave headroom for foam and any additions. Cup clearance matters as well as capacity.
- Insert the capsule and close the machine correctly. Use the lever or powered-head instructions for your model; do not force a capsule that does not fit.
- Start the normal coffee brew. Let the machine read the capsule and complete its programmed serving. A concentrated-coffee mode or saved volume setting can change the output.
- Wait for brewing to finish, then eject the used capsule. Add milk, water or ice according to the drink you are making. Keep the head closed during extraction.
The Vertuo Pop quick-start guide illustrates the standard preparation, rinse and descaling routines. Its controls are not a universal set of commands for VertuoPlus, Up or every other model; find your exact machine in Nespresso's assistance library.
Making a Latte or Iced Coffee
For a latte, start with an espresso or double espresso capsule and add warmed milk. Choosing a 230 ml Mug capsule and then adding a large milk portion makes a much larger, more diluted drink. A café au lait is a useful comparison if you prefer that longer coffee-and-milk balance.
For an iced latte, use a concentrated coffee serving with cold milk and ice. Allow room for all three. Ice melting changes dilution, so adjust the milk or ice before deciding that the capsule itself is too weak.
Some machines provide dedicated concentration modes. For example, the Vertuo Up manual describes Coffee Creations mode for milk and over-ice recipes and lists capsule exceptions. Do not assume the same feature, output or activation sequence on another model.
Caffeine, Calories and Sugar
Caffeine belongs to the capsule and serving, not to the machine name. Nespresso Hong Kong's size-specific reference lists 60–150 mg for a 40 ml Vertuo espresso, 130–160 mg for an 80 ml double espresso, and 130–200 mg for a 230 ml Mug. Its decaffeinated Vertuo range is listed at 4–12 mg per serving. Manufacturer reference ranges.
These ranges cover the cited regional assortment, with exceptions such as half-caffeinated products; they are not a current worldwide database of every capsule. Check a named capsule's local information for a more specific estimate. An intensity rating is not a caffeine measurement, and a larger volume is not a reliable way to calculate caffeine by multiplication.
Black Vertuo coffee has few calories; milk and sweeteners usually make the larger difference. As a specific published example, Nespresso Switzerland estimates about 4 kcal for a 230 ml flavored Vertuo coffee, before additions. That number is not a universal nutrition label for every capsule. Flavored coffee and coffee mixed with a flavored syrup are different products. Read the capsule's ingredients for sugar and allergens; then count any milk, cream or syrup separately. For drink-specific estimates, use the corresponding coffee drink guide.
Troubleshooting and Maintenance

Cleaning is not the same as descaling. Routine cleaning removes coffee residue; descaling addresses mineral buildup. Empty and rinse the removable parts as instructed and follow the model's cleaning cycle. Use the specified descaling product, dilution and complete rinse procedure when required. The machine's warning and manual are more reliable than a copied sequence of button presses.
Vertuo or Original for Your Routine?
Choose Vertuo when you want both small coffees and larger black servings from dedicated capsules, with the machine handling most brew settings. Check the capsules you expect to buy before choosing a machine, especially if large formats matter.
Compare Original if espresso-sized coffees and milk drinks are your main use. Compare K-Cup brewing if your starting point is a convenient larger mug; it is a different system with different pods. Our broader pod coffee guide places these systems together.
For running cost, compare what you actually drink: one larger capsule, one espresso capsule with milk, or two capsules for a stronger drink. The purchase price of the machine alone does not reveal that difference. Check local capsule supply and recycling options as part of the same decision.
