Troubleshooting
Espresso Leaking Around the Portafilter? Check the Fit and Seal
Find whether espresso leaks at the rim or sprays through the basket. Check seating, rim cleanliness, basket fit and the seal before changing grind.
Quick Answer
If espresso leaks from the joint where the portafilter meets the machine, stop the shot. Let the machine release pressure as its manual directs, then switch it off and allow the parts to cool before removing or cleaning them. Check the basket rim and how the portafilter fits before changing grind. Spray coming through a bottomless basket needs a different check.

Find Where the Liquid Escapes
The portafilter is the handled holder that locks into the group head. Its basket rim presses against a gasket inside the group to form the brewing seal. A leak at that joint and a jet from underneath the basket may both make a mess, but they point to different parts of the setup.

| Where the liquid appears | First check | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Between the group head and the top edge of the portafilter | Rim cleanliness, seating, basket fit and gasket | Follow the fit-and-seal checks below. |
| Through the holes of an exposed bottomless basket | Basket cleanliness and puck preparation | Use the espresso channeling guide; confirm the upper joint stays dry. |
| Inside the housing, beneath the machine or from an unexpected outlet | Exact machine fault | Stop using the machine and contact its manufacturer or service provider. |
A few stray jets from the underside are a reason to inspect espresso channeling. They do not, by themselves, establish that the group gasket is leaking. Identify the exit point from a safe viewing position; keep your face and hands away from the brew group.

Clean the Rim and Check the Fit
Remove loose coffee from the basket's upper lip and the accessible sealing area, using the cleaning method your machine allows. Grounds caught on the rim can interfere with the seal. Clean and dry the basket and portafilter before preparing the next shot.
Make sure the basket sits evenly in its holder. Insert the portafilter at your machine's marked starting position and lock it as directed. Do not force a holder that catches, sits crooked or suddenly needs much more effort than usual.
Breville lists incorrect insertion and coffee on the rim among the causes of edge leaks in its Barista Express manual. That is a useful starting check, rather than a reason to replace the gasket immediately.
Check the Basket and Coffee Dose
Did the problem start after changing baskets or portafilters? Confirm that the complete assembly is compatible with your exact machine. A matching advertised diameter alone does not confirm the correct locking tabs, basket shape or seal fit. If the original, undamaged assembly fitted correctly, use it to check the replacement's compatibility.
An overfilled basket is another check, especially if the holder became difficult to insert at the same time. Use the basket's intended dose and your maker's method for checking the tamped coffee level. Do not add extra coffee to try to seal a leaking joint.
If coffee also barely passes through the basket, deal with the leak first. Once the seal is sound, use the slow espresso shot guide to investigate flow. Making the grind coarser may alter flow, but it does not repair a damaged seal.
When the Gasket Needs Attention
If a clean, compatible assembly still leaks when fitted correctly, the group gasket deserves inspection. Visible damage, a displaced seal or a persistent change in fit is a reason to use the manufacturer's service instructions. La Marzocco explains how its group gasket forms the seal and why worn or ill-fitting gaskets can leak.
Order a part for the exact model and revision. Replacement access and gasket orientation vary, so use the matching procedure or arrange service. For routine care, our espresso machine cleaning guide separates everyday cleaning from the tasks that depend on the machine.
Check the Next Shot
After correcting the issue you found, prepare one normal shot if the portafilter now fits correctly and there is no visible damage. Watch the upper joint rather than the appearance of the espresso stream. A dry joint is the useful result here.
If the same rim leak returns, stop the test. Send support the model number, basket and portafilter details, where the liquid escapes, and whether the problem began after changing a part. A short video taken safely from the side can make that distinction clearer than a description of a 'messy shot'.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should the Portafilter Handle Point Straight Forward?
There is no universal final angle. Follow the locking position and normal resistance described for your machine. La Marzocco notes that the handle position can vary with a new gasket. Do not force another machine to match a photograph.
Can a New Gasket Still Leak?
Yes. Check that it is the correct part and has been fitted using the exact model's procedure. The basket and portafilter must also be compatible. Persistent leakage after replacement is a reason to ask support to check the assembly, rather than keep tightening it.
